The first Facebook drawing of 2017 was held on the 26th of February. Congratulations to Rigoberto Hernandez and Jamie Lynn Graham for winning some cool chemistry gear from our local section. MAC: Annual Networking Event Brought Chemists Together

The Annual Minority Affairs Committee (MAC) Networking Event was held at Park Tavern on March 7th. The event was well-attended by about 30 people. Attendees included chemists and chemical engineers employed at The Coca-Cola Company, Georgia-Pacific, Georgia Tech, Corporate Environmental Risk Management, a non-profit promoting STEM education, community college instructors, entrepreneurs, retired chemists, independent contractors, graduate and undergraduate students from Georgia Tech and more...

YCC: Program-in-a-Box was a Success

The Program-in-a-Box event focused on the Chemistry of Sports. This ACS Webinar had interesting interviews with materials chemists working on wearable and smart materials used to measure physiological data, and materials which respond to stress and strain in different ways. Another portion of the webinar focused on analytical methods for testing athletes for performance enhancing drugs. Dr. Ajay Mallia is Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Georgia Gwinnett College, Lawrenceville. Dr. Amanda Stockton’s talk on small sample microfluidics was out of this universe! The talk was truly intriguing with many great takeaways. One of our members commented that they enjoyed fluorescence detection being at the forefront as mass spectrometry is not an ubiquitous system for all species, particularly those that do not ionize. Women Chemists Committee (WCC) STEM Outreach Program

The WCC decided last year to actively serve in the community through outreach for STEM awareness and support. The committee connected with the science teacher at Pleasantdale Elementary school in Doraville and decided to volunteer at the school. WCC is serving as a scientific knowledge resource and volunteering during science-related activities. WCC has volunteered at the school over the last year via the Science Fair, STEM Day, and Career Day.

Science Coaches

The Georgia Section of the American Chemical Society is looking for Science Coaches! Coaches donate their time to science teachers who value the experience and expertise of chemistry experts. As districts begin to adopt Next Generation Science Standards in the 2017-2018 school year, teachers can especially benefit from the knowledge of coaches as they implement more hands-on activities and laboratory learning. Participating teachers range from elementary to high school teachers.

2017 Theme

The Georgia Local Section of the ACS has selected the theme, A Year of Giving: Catalyzing Chemistry via Community, for its 2017 programming. A Year of Giving refers to the outreach and education of technical and non-technical audiences about the importance of chemists and chemistry via the coupling of commonplace and technical chemistry ideas. We hope you will join and support us in this critical mission.
